First off, let me say that I have pretty much a live-and-let-live philosophy for most bugs. Unless my plants are really taking a beating, I try the manual removal method first, in addition to encouraging frogs (frog houses in the garden, etc.), birds (year 'round feeding, nesting materials, water, etc.), spiders, and other garden helpers (did you know that 'possums eat a lot of the bad bugs?). However, whenever there is a need to kill wasps or other flying things, here is a helpful hint: Hairspray. Use hairspray first then swat or spray with insecticide or whatever killing method you prefer. The hairspray makes them unable to fly (glues their little wings together, I guess) and they fall to the ground where you can more effectively deal with them. I try to make a quick kill rather than leave them to starve after the hairspray containment. (Be careful when you pick them up, the stinger will still get you even after they are down or dead.) This works well indoors, too, when they are out of reach of your fly swatter &/or you don't want to squoosh them on the wall or spray insecticides on your walls. Spray with the hairspray to get them to hold still, then deal with them on the floor as you like. Works like a charm for me. Deb in Houston
