Although there is some debate on this subject, most agree that: Chiles are much like most teenagers. Once they've discovered they can reproduce (fruit), all time & energy is spent on trying to accomplish just that at the expense of future growth. Knocking them back a bit will make them realize there is more growing yet to do. In a growing season of sufficient length, the plant will eventually take care of itself if the first few fruits are left on. However, most of us are limited in our seasons and so knocking them off helps. Hope this helps! -Jim C MWPH
