The slugs normally don't bother my pepper plants but they went for my cabbage heads this year. It has probably been covered in other digest but for newbies I always found that "Traps" made of stale beer works best to attract the slugs and then they drown in the beer. You can use large lids or ashtrays (sterilized so as not to spread tobacco Mosaic) or a small shallow bowl or plate. Push it into the ground so the slugs don't have to climb very high. You can also spread very coarse sand around the base of plants. The slugs dislike crossing this. As I pointed out in a recent post I like to use coffee grounds and eggshells for fertilizers and soil builders. The eggshells ground up are also excellent as a slug deterrent spread around the base of susceptible plants.
