Hi Pod Heads... Well Tom and I went to our local Nob Hill grocery store (I believe it's mainly a west coast chain) and had a bit of a shock (pleasant). The Nob Hill Chain has been bought by Raley's supermarkets and is getting in 2000 new items in their shelves. Their choices have been mainly middle class white bread america before, very little in the way of unusual spices and sauces, and in those areas where they do have mexican or other types of food has been the sorta stuff you see at Safeway.... Old El Paso, and lots of repitition. This is apparently changing, I guess as more chili-heads are being spawned from the pods of home gardens ;). When we went their today, they had Bufalo Chipotle Salsa (79 cents!) and the Jalapeno salsa by Bufalo, and low and behold Paces has come out with a chipotle salsa and a fire roasted garlic and chile salsa. Now I don't think the chipotle salsa from Paces even begins to approach what we made the other day, but in a pinch if you just need a salsa it's fine <g>, and I can addend to it to "notch it up a bit". I didn't try the latter salsa though it looks intriguing. The store is now also carrying chile de Arbols, New Mexican and California chiles as well as ground coriander, etc, at rock bottom prices especially in comparison to McCormick (blech!) . They've got whole canned tomatillos as well and *YES* chipotles con adobo! Hurrah! or should that be Ole! They also had a mango/peach salsa, as well as others, and other mexican ingredients, like hominy, nepalitos (prickly pear) etc. I didn't even think to check out their Szechuan or Thai ingredients though I'm going to tomorrow. They also are stocking all of Paul Prudhomme's powders and a few of his "instant" rice dishes, they have cuban black rice and beans, and most of Luzianne's stuff but most of *those* I can't eat nor can Tom because they have MSG...we used to like them. I can't get my head around why they would add MSG, when most Chinese restaurants don't anymore. However I love the Luziane Ice Tea blend and that's MSG free so that's a good thing ;) (Ya, we developed the allergy to MSG almost overnight. It happens). Anyway this is great, because the drive to the Mexican market can be a real pain in the ***. I'll still be going there for guajillos, and chipotles in bulk, as well as limones, but this is a welcome change to the atmosphere of Scotts Valley. Oh I forgot they also carry Adobo Pippian and Mole sauce from Dona Maria, but though I have bottles of each in my shelf, I'm not sure how they are. Patiently waiting for peppers to ripen! well not so patiently.
