If you are in an urban area, be aware that most municipalities frown on the discharge of firearms in built up areas. Having said that, a light weight shotgun like a 4-10 is ideal for varmints. When I was a kid, during a drought, the ground hogs went after our watermelons more than anything else in the garden. Perhaps you could grow some sacrificial melons. Moth balls tossed down their tunnels tend to discourage them. They may just move on. Another method is too block all their holes but one and then run a hose off a roto-till or lawn mower exhaust and gas them. If you can get your hands on any, a pint of carbon tetrachloride in their tunnels will do them in easier than CO. You can also adopt a dog or a big mean ol' cat to patrol the yard for you.
