[CH] Hab-loving ants

Every year, my habs are afflicted by tiny ants which eat holes in the
peppers and just have a ball running around inside. I guess they have a
discriminating sense of taste, because they wait until the peppers are
ripe--the middle of August here in Virginia. Is there a chemically
benign way to ward them off? I worry about strong chemicals diffusing
through the pepper skin, in which case even washing won't help.
