All you folks who could have attended the Chile Festival in Bowers really missed a great time! Dave Hendricks and his wife, Jeff and Tammy Porter, Karen Stober, Andy Barnhart and his son Doug, Chip Welch and my Bro Rich attended. Chip was there vending for Red Lion and Rich drove 4 hours from Virginia on his motorcycle. It attained full Hotluck status! There were close to 10 thousand folks enjoying the food, pepper products, crafts, music and sampling dozens of heirloom chiles and tomatoes in the local fields. We also continued in the tradition of Jeff and Tammy serving drinks from the wet bar in the trunk of their car. By far the most entertaining part was when Jeff goaded Doug Barnhart into entering in the jalapeno eating contest. He signed up at the last minute and vied with 10 other folks to see how many jalepenos they could eat in 30 seconds. Naturally after sending most of the day warming up on various habs and such, he swept the contest and set a new Bowers record of 8 chiles in 30 seconds! He won a big honking trophy and a weekend at a resort hotel, was interviewed by a local newspaper and was generally a local celebrity. Of course he had been cheered on by the ChileHeads contingent who promtly began horning in on the glory, and were soon swaggering along not unlike the posse of a celebrity rap singer, bumping old ladies, little kids and autograph seekers out of Dougs way... Well... maybe it wasn't quite that intense... We still had a good time! And ultimately we retired to the Bowers Tavern for a few cold Yeunglings... pictures will be forthcoming... =Mark "Runs With Scissors" Stevens @ http://www.exit109.com/~mstevens @ @ ICQ# 2059548 @ Where ya' from?
