In preparation for the SE Ohio hot luck this weekend, I've made the Old Sour marinade which I will (probably) use on grilled chicken wings. I've posted the recipe before, but this time I made it a little differently. Quite simple this time: 1 16-oz bottle Key West Lime Juice 3 fresh habaneros 7 cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons salt The authentic technique is to mash the garlic and salt together with a mortar and pestle, but I cheated and used a garlic press. I minced the habs fine, mixed everything together, and now it will sit while the flavors combine. For some reason the tomato gardens aren't offering much this year, so I don't even know if I will make salsas this year. However I do have a variety of peppers coming along. Usually I plant the hot peppers away from my mother's sweet pepper patch, but this spring she inadvertently grabbed my mixed bunch of seedlings. She planted everything quite close together, and many have fallen over from the weight of their fruit, Now I pull aside a branch of serranos to discover a cluster of hidden habs. And the Datil plant - Jeez! Swarthy, lush, dark and ruffly, wider than it is tall, heavily laden - I'm just not sure it came from this planet. Oh, for those who asked to see that ristra necklace picture - I'm almost finished with that roll of film. I'll scan it and put it on my site.
