Dear friends, Just a note to let you know that we came through this scary episode at 2:46 a.m. in fine fettle (ever wonder what a fettle is?) We were rudely awakened by a rather strong, rolling ground motion which lasted about 3-40 seconds. Lamps swayed, the house creaked and groaned...and the block wall did not fall on our chile patch (yay, team!). The wires sparked and arced, and the transformer on the next block to the south of us blew up in a blue flash, which then plunged our neighborhood into darkness until 7:35 a.m., when electricity was restored. About the only positive thing I can say about the disruption in power is that it was practice for the 31st, when we have to change all our clocks and timing mechanisms. No cracks, no broken windows or broken anything. Thank God! As Yogi Bear would have said, "I had deja vu all over again," with the ghosts of the '94 earthquake still fresh in our minds. It could have been a whole lot worse! Ron Van Nuys, CA
