My sentiments eggsactly.  But, for those with lots of counter space, Consumer 
Reports listed the following rice cookers as "excellent"
Rival 4450 - $25
Oster Food designer 4711 - $50
B&D Flavor Scented - $30
Salton Nutritionist RA10NR - $50
Aroma ARC-703G - $20
Hitachi RD4056W - $50
Panasonic - $160 (also slow cooks)
Salton RA3 - $30
the first 3 on list are steamer-rice cookers, the rest are dedicated rice 
cookers
