The mention of Malaysian Curly Puffs reminded me of an incident several years ago. I was in a Frito-Lay processing plant trying to solve some concrete problems for them and got an inadvertent tour of the cooking lines. At one point, we passed the Cheetos line where they were emerging from the fryer. I snagged one to experience the freshest possible Cheeto. The thing had absolutely NO taste at all. It is all in the coating. It still amazes me that you can somehow deep fry corn and end up with a nice texture and zero taste. ...no oil...no corn...nothing.
