Jim: I have experience with trying to transplant peppers like tomatoes. It hasn't worked for me! The pepper stem is much woodier than the tomato stem, and does not put out feeder roots from a buried stem. What this results in is plant which rots or becomes brittle at the ground. As we anticipated the drought last year, I planted many of my peppers in little square bowls - the way you'd plant fruit trees (the theory was that I could water the dish, which would retain the water instead of having it run off). What I got was peppers which didn't hold up under a wind, and spent all summer staking away! Good luck! Robert.
