I wouldn't worry overly much, Marianne... I've done similar things in zone 4/5 in Iowa, and everything has come out fine. If you're worried about heat transfer, you might want to stuff a sheet of styrofoam under the leaf bags (if you can keep the styrofoam from sailing off some winter night), or, barring that, some sections of newspaper.
