[gardeners] flowers for my area

Hi,
I have two questions. When I read the letters about tulips popping up and
hyacinths soon to bloom and frost, they mean very little to me. Would it be
difficult to sign the letters with our location. Like "John Doe from
Denver, Co". Then if I also lived in Denver, I'd could apply that info to
myself?

secondly, kinda along the same grain. I'm looking for short, but not
necessarily dwarf annual or perennial flowers that can deal with my wet,
wet, wet coastal conditions. While I don't live directly on the coast, I
live 5 miles (as the crow flies) from the ocean. I get alot of rain.
Winters hardly ever freeze. And frost are even uncommon. I'd like to add
(possibly bright) color to the areas of my yard that are mostly shade.
Foxglove is one perfect example. Any other ideas?
