Hi George,
I was raised on the Gulf Coast near Galveston. My Dad had an entire
city lot in veg.garden and we had lots of trouble with borers.
I have gardened on our new place for 3 seasons now and have not had any
borers so far.
We do have four kids but three are married. Still have a 14 yr. old son
at home. We have two grand children with one on the way. My Dad and Mom
have reached that time in life that Dad can't garden the way he used to.
So we try to raise enough for our kids, four sisters and a brother and
several nieces and nephews, Mom-in-law and Mom and Dad. We are the only
family members that don't live in one city or the other. My wife and I
enjoy canning, pickling and preserving so we do it on a scale large
enough for our family to enjoy. We even pick all the wild
plums, grapes, and berries that we can stand, for jam and juice.
I hope by fall to expand the garden another 1/3 of an acre. My wife
wants another 1/3 in strawberries and blueberries so I'll give it a try
and see what happens.
By the way if it wasn't for our county ag.extension agent we wouldn't
be as productive on such a small amount of garden. If you don't use your
co. agent, contact them. They are a virtual gold mine of info. The web
is also full of wonderful gardening sites.
