The bedding plants I buy from commercial nurseries *never* do as well as 
stuff I start from seed myself. I put it down to the commercial use of 
growth regulators and lack of conditioning/hardening off before the plants 
are put out for sale.

I'm also beginning to notice that plants that I've grown from seed I have 
collected myself are usually faster growing, stronger and sturdier than 
those from seed I've bought. I'm guessing that's a combination of factors, 
too: a) my own seed is from plants that have adapted themselves to my 
growing conditions, b) it's marginally fresher.
