Yes, Cheryl, I hear it all around me -- that after a mild and
rainy long spring, and a dry summer, next winter is
destined to be v-e-r-y cold and snowy.

Today we had the first rain I have witnessed since before July 4th.
It measured 2-1/2" in just about an hour, and after 46 years in
this house, water entered thru the basement's building blocks. A
great many of our streets and highways are completely closed.
And we are promised another burst during the night. Guess we
will have to camp downstairs tonight, so we can keep up with the
mopping ....

The summer's heat and drought cost us 10 mature shrubs, gone
with the wind in spite of irrigation. It's so sad. I dug out 9 of them
yesterday, and it was traumatic. There is still one ilex to remove
which is so large that I didn't even try -- I'll need help. My hubby
Jim said he wondered what the garbage man thought with our
unique kind of trash out there every week. I said I didn't think he
thought of thinking at all, and a job is just a job.
