Dear all on list,
  I send many, many thanks for all the helpful hints and
encouragement 
regarding planting alpine strawberries.  I have saved all these
posts 
and as soon as it calms down after the holidays I shall pull
them out 
along with catalogs and get down to ordering specific varieties
etc.  I 
think I shall try both seeds and plantlings for my start.  I am
indeed 
using them as edible landscaping along my inclined driveway --
if the 
birds and squirrels get them all I shan't whine too loudly, but
would be 
very pleased to actually eat some of them myself! It beats
mowing the 
(ick!) grass.   Here's hoping!
