One way that a lot of farmers could stay in business would be to
run a CSA and to garden biointensively. This way, you need very
little equipment. Actually you can do it for under $100.

You grow your own fertilizer and seeds so after the first year
of buying seeds, you eliminate that expense. Although most
people would probably have some seed expense each year in order
to try small amounts of new things.

Most people would probably want to spend some more for hoses if
they lived in an area with unreliable rain.

Families can make good livings doing this and they keep the money
for their work rather than it going to the middlepeople.
