I think that the Northeast needs some representation in this discussion. I
live in Northampton Massachusetts, about 2 hours west of Boston, Zone 5.

I'm 48, married, one daughter in college nearby. We live on one acre on a
somewhat rural road on the outskirts of the city. The soil is so rocky on
our land that all my vegetable gardening is done in raised beds.

I presently have 22 sheep (they graze on a neighbor's farmland), lots of
rabbits, an old golden retriever, a silky terrior, and a border
collie/aussie puppy. I sing in an a capella group, am a beginning weaver,
and will learn to handspin this spring. I work part-time as a
pharmaceutical sales rep (detailing Advil, a good friend for gardeners!)

I have to make hard choices about managing time, including my time online.
I receive several hundred e-mails daily due to all of my interests. I tend
to lurk on this list because I usually don't read the chatty threads. If
the title of the thread contains a gardening topic that interests me I skim
it. I've posted questions to the list and gotten good answers.

Would I change the chattiness of the list if I could? Absolutely not.
That's what gives it its charm. I know that I'm missing alot of wonderful
posts by not reading more thoroughly. It's one of those hard choices I have
to make. OK, back to lurkdom.
