George, my local guru gave me explicit instructions for your
borer situation:
Go out after dark with a strong light and a lady's hat pin plus
a single-edge razor blade. Zucchini stems are transluscent,
and you will be able to spot a borer inside, close to the inner
wall of the plant. You then have a choice: you can insert the
hat pin many times in a complete circle around the zuke stem,
and he should become mortally wounded and drop down inside
the stem. The other choice is to make a 3 inch slit in the stem
OPPOSITE THE CRITTER, open it up a bit, reach inside and mash
the caterpillar against the wall it clings to, using the razor.
Sounds daunting.
Since all the nutrient factors flow vertically in a zucchini, the fact
that you are making a slit should not kill the plant. If they get into
the roots, however, it's Goodbye, Charlie.
