George, the chicken soup should work wonders --- so will the TLC. We're about to get some of your rain, so I took time out to dead- head my big dahlias, and tie up the enormously tall stalks against the storm. Dahlias do something funny: mine grow to about 8 or 9 feet tall, and when it rains, sometimes the weight of the rainwater causes a number of open blooms to fall straight down, unless I have kept up-to-date with tie-backs. If I don't return for a week, the stems which have fallen have NOT died, nor have the flowers on them -- they continue to grow now in the traditional upright position! In effect, each one has become a V ..... My front door red Japanese cut-leaf maple has decided to frighten me out of my wits: it is totally defoliating, at least 4 to 6 weeks early. I am told to wait until all the leaves have come off, and then inspect every branch for soft spots or insects. Does anyone have experience with this...? Tell Miz Anne we are thinking of her -- hope she has enough art books to see her thru the next few days ....... Penny, NY Have been laid up for a week now with a swollen foot, and the doctors only know what it isn't. Not very helpful. Today was the first day I walked, so of course I climbed into the car and visited a garden nursery! Perhaps the World Trade Center problem has really hit the public, for there were NO customers there! ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
