Mycorrhizal fungi comes in various strains--each specific to a type of crop.
The VAM strain I used is specific to tomatoes and other nightshades.  True,
compost does have some mycorrhizae, but you don't know which strains, and
sometimes there is so much N-P-K residue in composted materials that will
kill mycorrhizae.
