Byron, I grow over a hundred tomato varieties per year and use only four sheets of newspaper under each cage as mulch. Less than four seems to deteriorate too rapidly and does not have enough porosity while more than that tends to pull away when the tiller hits a corner and there is also not enough porosity. This system keeps weeds out of the cages as well as helping keep the soil damp. By mid Septeember most of the paper has degraded but by then it doesn't matter. I have used landscape fabric mulches across 3' wide raised beds with considerable success but would not even consider it for field plantings. Good gardening, Chuck Wyatt
