The one I have had that the roots went up died

I never worry about it.  Gravity causes roots to grow down, shoots up.  If
they come out "up-side-down", they will correct themselves.  I plant the
seed
about 1/4" deep, so that if the root emerges at the top, it won't be out in
the air before it has had a chance to bend down.
