Lots of researchers have, and they have found that these microscopic organisms that inhabit plant roots can be beneficial. In particular, vascular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) increase yield in peppers grown in low-phosphorous or low-moisture soils. They probably increase either phosphorous or moisture uptake, or both. The plants are inoculated with VAMF at transplanting.
