You didn't mention what "soil" is in the container. It is a good practice not to
buy any product called "Potting Soil" ... there is no standard for potting soil.
It is better to use quaility artificial potting mixes containing peat moss,
vermiculite and perlite. And, for tomatoes, a scant handful of lime.
