How depressing -- and annoying that HD doesn't have some folks that either
know the answers (or know where to refer you for them).

Not their fault, Remember HD, Lowes etc. These jobs are not much more than
min wage. Doubt if you could even find a "Master Gardener" at one of these
places.
or someone that could even detect a disease.
One advantage to buying at a nursery or Lawn and Garden Center, most have at
least Master Gardeners some even have horticulturist. Most of the one's
around here, also have the Big Ortho Problem Solver Book, that you can look
at.
Books still beat the web for disease and bug ID's
