I use grass clippings since I have plenty of that available but I tend to
keep it back from my seedlings at least 6" from the base so that slugs
aren't invited to just come and chew any time they please.

You can use whatever material you have. High carbon material like sawdust
and cedar mulch is fine as long as you don't mix it in. Newspaper, straw,
even cardboard are all excellent for keeping weeds down and they'll
decompose by the end of the season.
