I was looking at some old chilli posts and saaw this might berelevant to the recent discussion >From Australian Doctot 18 July 1997 Athletes who eat chillies before excercise may burn carbohydrates more efficiently and have a performance advantage over those who do not according to a study presented to the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Denver . The study found a potential benefit for athletes who ate chillie peppers before excercise . Capsaicin , the active ingredient in chillies , was found to increase an athletes ability to burn carbohydrates more efficiently . Korean and Japanese university researchers coooperated on the experiment . Eight experienced middle and long distance male runners were fed a standard meal the night before riding an excercise bike . The next morning they ate a breakfast that included 10g of dried hot red pepper flakes , about 1.5 times more than a typical Korean consumed daily . After breakfast the mens blood was tested at 30 minute intervals for 2.5 hours . The subjects then rode the bikes at moderate intensity for one hour with blood sampled every 10 minutes . The same 8 men formed a control group by cycling for the same hour before and after the test ride , consuming the same meals without the pepper flakes . The scientists discovered that carbohydrates were more readily oxidised and used by the muscles during the ride after the pepper breakfast . Furthermore ,the athletes were burning carbohydrates more rapidly and effectively in the 2.5 hours after the meal and before the ride . Sports nutritionists were adopting a wait and see attitude about the effects of Capsaicin . ---AAP HELL WE ALL KNEW THAT !! Give the athletes a couple of Habs and they will burn carbohydrates quicker , especially if you make them ride before they can cool their palates Michael Bailes, The Fragrant Garden, Portsmouth Road, Erina.
