Re: [CH] Cheap hot sauces

Well this isn't such a tough question.

I generally purchase hot sauces in the price range of $.79 to $6.00,
depending on exactly where I am making the purchase. Generally if I'm at the
grocery store I would tend to pay on the low end, while if I am in a specialty
shop I would pay more.

My girlfriend just picked up two bottles (well trained) at the 99cents store
just a few blocks from home. Tried them on Pizza Saturday night....very good,
but not very hot. They are both made by Peppers Unlimited of Louisiana, under
the Bulliard's label. One is the Garlic Hot Sauce, the other is Jalapeno
Pepper Sauce.

Anyhow I prefer not to call any "hot sauce" cheap, I like the term
"inexpensive". The bad ones I just call awful.

If I am going to shell out $6.00 for a bottle it is usually based on having
tasted the product, or on a recomendation or two from this list. So far the
recommendations have been right on the money.

I've only got about 20 or 30 bottles in the fridge right now and each one has
its uses for me at least. I even have the large bottle of Tabasco that no one
seems to like, but since it was my first hot sauce I have a soft spot in my
heart for it. You will, however, find NO bottles of that dreaded PACE stuff
on my property.

Speaking of which, on one of my jobs they use that Pace stuff as an ingredient
for their salsa. I have told them that I cannot make the salsa according to
their recipe because Pace is not allowed by my religion. So far its worked, I
haven't made salsa (for the general public) since that time 5 months ago.

Anyhow, before I meander too far off the topic. I would recommend buying the
inexpensive bottles on a whim, or maybe after reading the ingredients, or
manufacturer, etc., etc. With the more expensive bottles I would recommend
contacting this list for opinions.
