Luke in Oz, you teased us with promises but never did give us the full report of your stay in Houston; I'm eager to hear if you discovered some new haunts for us. Luke in Oz replied to dan and deb - Well Chile-dren if you thought Win 95-98 were (was) bad, wait till you try to use the AT & T phone system they have in the USA or one of the other sub carriers when you are just a poor turista trying to find a phone number for De "De Forest" clan in Houston Tx. I can honestly say that there are several AT & T operators who now have a somewhat vivid grasp of the Australian venacular and will probably not connect another single Aussie. One in particulr may even try to spit down the line. As to the Fiesta Mart on 1960 & 249 Wow it was heaven to me..! I found all manner of strange and wonderful foods there; Andoulie sausage, Boudin sausage, Chiles in abundance fresco and dried, Manzanos which I ate after i de-seeded them and had the misfortune to leave the seeds in the jacket which went to the cleaners, Sauces, and sauces on special .59c a bottle of Bonnet sauce fronm Jamaica. Mexican Churros - Divine! Horchata which Walt Gray has kindly sent me a recipe for, Muy Gracias Walt. Negro Modelo Beer- IMHO miles and miles better than Corona or Tecate . This place was a joy every time we went there. As my Aunt lives in Champions just across the road from the golf course and in a bit, she was not comfortable in stopping at some of the many places we drove past around Houston, much to my dissapointment. Hell just because its a tough part of town and its late can't we stop for a snack.- Nope .. Places we did go were The Hickory Hollow BBq, Nice Brisket, sauce was a bit heavy though. a few other small hole in the wall places none spectacular. Channel 13 Marvin Zindler's friday night resteraunt report on Houston eateries cured me of eating out in Houston, especially the night after we drove thru River Oaks Estate and looked at all the expensive houses and the Country Club, then when we got back to my Aunts house and watched Marvin give his report, which detailed Health Dept reports on the Country Club. Those Houstonians reading this will understand my reluctance to dine out. This particular show should be mandatory viewing for anybody contemplating a career in the food industry, and could be as big a hit as Southpark which SBS Ethnic Television in Australia will not give me the " %#@$%*^ " credit for telling them about,(Brent Leatherman used to sig line quotes from the show and kindly showed me the way to the site after which I faxed SBS asking them to televise this Ethnic US show fully 3 months before they ran it. We actually ran into Marvin at Orlando Airport flying back to Houston after covering the Shuttle launch and my Aunts husband "the Bulgarian" nearly drove Marvin mad talking about politics. Fortunatly for him he was flying first class and got to board the plane early. But we know where you live Marvin. Near the Fiesta mart I had 300 emails downloaded by the nice people at TIC computer store, I skimmed thru them and didn't get them to print them up as the guy told me had his puter set to leave them on the server. WRONG !!! so I lost all mail from 15 0ct thru 2 Nov = 300+ . OUCH.. Did get some Chiletepins from a nice American Indian lady called ISABEL at Lupes Plant place up the road from the Fiesta Mart. These have resisted my attempts to germinate them so far but as she gave me lots for free !!!!! I will endeavour to persevere with the means at my disposal. Luke in Oz
