>Hick'ry is nice. But so is maple. Fruit woods often give good >results... notably apple and cherry wood. Another I have used and >haven't seen much on is grapevine - I smoked some Hungarian Hot Wax >this summer using the trimmings from when we pruned back the grapes. >Outstanding. Maple is plentiful up here and so that's my usual smoking wood. I use apple whenever possible (my mom has an apple tree in her yard and I always keep the prunings) but I never thought of using grapevine before! Thanks for the idea. Another one you can try: My basil plants grow into four-foot shrubs before they're ready to harvest. I keep the trunks and sticks, dry them out, and use them to flavor the smoke. A little of this stuff goes a long way if you want to try it, though, so be careful!
