Thanks to all for the timely and thoughtful responses. In eastern MA (I don't know about the rest of the country) Home Depot currently has a sale on 48" light fixtures; $8.47 in my local store. They also have a bunch of cool and warm lights on sale for as little as $1.10. Check it out in your area.
