One good thing about peppers is they like company.  You can really crowd
them and I do to take advantage of a very small garden.  I plant mine with
only 1 foot spacing.  I usually stake them before they get too big and then
have to reach in from the sides of garden to harvest.  With the spacing I
use there is no room to walk into the garden, but there also is no problems
with weeds once the plants get big since no light will make it to the ground
anyway.  I think its personal, but I don't imagine you'd want them much
closer than I plant mine.
