There is a discussion going on at one of my clubs about a kind of "Brazilian pepper tree" being circulated someplace on the web as pepper seed and I wonder if anyone on this list knows more about it. It doesn't sound like a fun kind of "pepper" plant. Info appreciated. Rose Someone wrote: "I'm concerned. In south Fl. we have a weed bush-tree that everyone in the state is trying to eradicate. It is called the Brazilian Pepper Bush. It grows like wildfire, has clusters of red berries the size of pepper corns, (eaten by birds & spread by them). For many people, it is poison to the touch (like poison ivy). I have never heard anyone say that the berries can be used for pepper corns, or if they are poison if swallowed. ..........If you are going to plant Br. Pepper, I just checked my copy of FL Landscape Plants. ( based on a book printed in 1901, latest ed. 1975}. Really up to date huh? They list the ht. at 25 ft. which it attains almost as fast as kudzu (my hyperb.) It is a relative of Sumac, and gives off an odor like turpentine. I am also blessed with no reaction to touching the plant (so far). The only way of getting rid of the plant (according to a local nursery) is to scrape a girdle to the cambium and coat it with super concentrate Roundup.
