They sound like dried japones to me. Now having said that, I say this. I am not an expert, don't grow 'em, haven't tried 'em. However, I just saw some dried japones this morning and they are about the size of a serrano, but a bit thicker and shorter. Larger than a thai bird, but about the same color, deep red.
