I read your earlier post about the serrano and the dogwater and LOL. <g>

Have to say that I don't do much container gardening any more.  My backyard
is dense clay too, but I have spent years on my garden spot, lightening and
enriching the soil with organic matter (compost, manure, etc) and now I
don't have to worry about it anymore.

I would not hesitate to put more than one plant per pot to stress them with
competition.  Just make sure the pots are large enough to accomodate the
root systems.  It's been my experience that chiles have extensive and deep
roots, and it's not good for the plants to get rootbound.
