I tried to post this before, but maybe I got the address wrong, it didn't
show up, so I'm trying again. Now, undoubtedly the other one will show
up. :-)

Just got back from the Pig'n'Pepper where I judged hot sauces. It's
a tough job, but someone's got to do it. :-) I had a great time!!!
Even better was the free admission. I would have paid to be a judge,
but don't tell. :-)

I was one of the judges in the Hot category, and there were 5 Amateur, and
6 professional entries, and then we got to judge our best Hot sauces
against the best of the hottest category, for the one best hot sauce
overall. It was very very close, but the professional from the hottest
just barely nudged out our best amateur hot sauce, and then only by a very
slight preference in texture of the sauces. We also sampled the best of
the other group (hottest).

I'm sorry that I can't remember the names of the professional sauces, but
we were particularly impressed with a Mango - Papaya hot sauce by Tropical
T....? from Florida(??) which while not really hot was really excellent in
what it was trying to do. It tied for first in the professional category,
even without very much heat, it was such a clean and unmuddled taste.

If anyone is going tomorrow, I recommend you try the crawfish at Chile
Brothers from Naragansett R.I. It was really great. Unfortunately, the
weather was terrible today, it poured and cleared, then poured again.
Bring a poncho or a raincoat, and wear some sturdy shoes or boots.

I just thought I'd post a short report.

BTW, as a reminder, there is the New England hot-luck next Sunday at Jim
McGrath's <jimm@hi.com>. I saw Jim at the Pig'n'Pepper and if you aren't
on his list for directions, you can probably write him about it. It's a
combination bar-be-cue/hot food thing, and part of the rules are that you
bring food (Jim supplies the beer/soda/etc).

It's sort of an open house type thing, but it would be nice if you plan to
go to send Jim an email in advance, especially if you want directions. :-)
