> This is VERY simplified, so please don't flame me. :-) > "Diets" don't work. 4 to 5 small, well-balanced meals a day, combined > with exercise, are the only way to safely lose, and keep off, excess > (beyond what YOUR body needs) weight. Well-balanced means smaller > amounts of saturated fats (fatty beef, butter, whole milk), more > vegetables (especially chiles as they are high in vitamins and fiber), > more rice and potatoes, less pasta and a glass of water with > every meal. This is NOT a flame, certainly, but high-carbohydrate, low-protein, low-fat diets do not work and are unhealthful. Fat and protein are necessary to maintain a healthy body. Fat, protein, and carbohydrates must be consumed in closely maintained proportions, based on one's height, weight, percentage of body fat, and exercise level. The best guidelines are: * Eat generous amounts of fresh vegetables, fruits, and nuts. * Eat wild leafy greens such as purslane, dandelion, and lambs quarters. * Eat sufficient protein for your body's needs. Exactly how much is determined by your ideal weight and your activity level (which should be high). As much as possible, eat protein with low levels of saturated fat such as fish, chicken, turkey, lean cuts of beef, pork or lamb, and eggs. * Eat grains only in moderation, if at all. If you must, choose whole grains. * Do not eat dairy products except small amounts of cultured products such as yogurt and cheese. * As much as possible, eat monounsaturated fats in preference to saturated fats. Good fat sources are nuts, avocados, and olives. * Eat whole foods. Avoid processed foods and foods containing hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and food additives. * Do not add salt to your foods. If you must, use a lite salt which is a mixture of sodium and potassium salts. * No food is ever completely banned, but some should be eaten in moderation. The better your choices, the better your performance. * Drink at least 8 full glasses of water each day. * Perform significant daily exercise, including long walks or biking, strength training, and stretching. You should try to move every part of your body every day.
