The recipe called for 2 cups of buttermilk - 500 ml, right?  Just take
500 ml of regular milk, add 10 ml of vinegar and stir it in.  Wait five 
minutes for the mixture to clabber.  Use that sour milk in place of the
buttermilk.

Buttermilk in the US is skim milk, cultured to make it sour.  The baking
powder and soda need the acid in it to work effectively.
