I suggest that you contact your water softener rep or company. My understanding is that older models did cause problems and newer models do not. We haven't been using our softener for a couple of years because our water isn't really very hard, but we did water all of our plants with softened water for about 5 years with no problems and we have a nursery. We also have very sandy fast draining soil which may cause any salts to leech out. Like most other gardening things, there are probably no hard and fast rules which will work for everyone.
