Time for the official first notice of the Open Fields! The plants are in the ground (finally!) and so I feel safer to finally announce the Open Fields. For those unfamiliar, this is where I invite anyone and everyone to come to my humble fields (central Indiana) and help themselves to what they wish of my harvest. It is a chance to meet fellow CH's from all over the country (and Canada it seems!) and talk chile, eat, harvest, socialize, & tell stories. Camping is primitive but hotels are a short (15 minute) drive away. You MUST please RSVP me as soon as you know you're attending so that I can get a rough count & inform my landlord. I've about 20 varieties in the ground (1.5 acres total). It is possible (like last year) there may be a harvest restriction on a variety or two, but you should be able to pick all the Savinas (tm), orange habs, New Mexicans, Cayennes, and other assorted oddballs you'd like. Dates: September 23rd & 24th (if you must arrive on Friday, please let me know- my house can sleep 6 extras since our strays have moved out) Food & Drink: Bring your own, although we will contribute. Abby & I provide some wine, cokes, water, and beer. We also provide the fresh chiles ;-) Food is whatever we can bribe Alex into cooking, or you care to cook yourself. Midwestern folk eat beef & chicken- bring your own tofu ;-) Rules (very important- must read): 1. This is not my land and permission to do this event is granted from year to year. We must leave the place cleaner than when we started. 2. We may only pick chiles and the occasional apple. 3. No driving on the property without my escort. Irrigation pipes are buried throughout & are easily damaged. 4. Have fun, eat chiles, make friends. Gift bags will be provided to all who attend. There is also (likely) a MAJOR surprise in store. I appreciate all those who feel compelled to bring us gifts, but I'd really rather you didn't. Your attendance is truely more than enough. Please also be aware that this is the peak of my harvest. I'm usually worn a little thin by this point in the season and likely to tire early, act goofy(er), and be generally distracted. I hope to see some of you there & hope that you have a great time! E-mail me for directions. -Jim C MWPH
