My in-laws live in Springfield, & my father-in-law is always trying to
one-up me in eating spicy foods. The problem is, he has almost no tolerance
for anything hotter than Ro-Tel, but just can't admit it. Several years
ago, he took me to lunch at The Den chili parlor. It was the original
location that Dave talked about. Great lunch joint. Of course, my
Dad-in-law told everyone that I was going to eat the Firebrand chile.
Naturally he only had a bowl of mild "Hell no, I don't eat that stuff."
Once I got past the layer of suet floating on top, & the fact that they
didn't serve beer, or any other alcohol, it wasn't too bad. Being a member
of the "gentler sex," the bouffanted waitress thought I was being tortured.
"You don't have to finish it honey. I'll put your name on the wall anyway."
She didn't realize who she was talking to. Of course my name went on the
wall, & my Dad-in-law quieted down for a while.

A couple years later, on our next visit, I'm informed that The Den is now
closed, & "the wall" is gone, but not to fear, I can have lunch @ Joe
Rogers' "If I think I'm up to it." Same suet, etc. This time Dad has a
mild chili-dog! while I'm getting my name on the new wall. I still haven't
seen my name @ either place, but I always remember to bring it up when
"someone" is shooting his mouth off again.
