I am writing Hormel. I want my > money back and I'm going to give them a piece of my mind. Your first mistake was thinking that Hormel would know anything about chilli. The company that makes SPAM (which is a great goodness) is not going to be making edible chilli, let alone anything with heat in it. They come from lutefisk and Norwegian bachelor farmer land. Hormel chilli is nearly as bad as Armour, Stagg or Wolf Brand - none of which is fit to eat. The only chilli in a can that I have found worthy of eating, much less buying are Chilli Man (originated by two time World Champion Joe DeFrates) a product of the Milnot Corp (still - the gummint anti-trust folks spit-up on their purchase by Heinz) and Ray's Chilli (originated by Joe's uncle Ray Defrates - who won no world titles but did teach Joe the chilli biz) from Ray's Brand Products. Ray's and Chilli Man both make a "Coney Island" Hot Dog Sauce - which essentially is their chilli sans beans and in a small can. Chilli Man makes a chilli which is claimed to be hot... and it has a speck more heat (cayenne, I think) than their standard chilli. But, nowhere near CH levels - even for those of the pepper wuss nomenclature. Those who would read this and dissent from my dismissal of their favourite canned chilli as unfit to eat may send a can or two to my snail-mail address where it will be tested and reported upon. Do not send Armour, Hormel, Stagg or Wolf Cookies^h^h^h^h^h^h^h Brand in any of their iterations... I have tried them and found them lacking severely. Others I have tried and rejected (in the interests of saving your postage on pre-jects) include Steak & Shake, Cactus Annie's, Lady Lee, Just Rite, Jack-A-Lope Chili (sic), Taylor's, Ann Page, Round-up, Cowboy Bob's... among others. Also Empress and Skyline which are Cincinatti Chilli and while OK in a can are pale representations of their chilli-parlour selves and are so loaded with Allspice as to be outside the chilli mainstream. <GGG> My advice to you, Risa, is to get a good grade of Hot Dog sauce (meat only please) and kick it up a notch or three with Trappey's Red Devil or other favourite hot condiment.
