Hi all, I dunno if this will work for you, but my father has accidently discovered a way of keeping the lower stem and roots alive over winter in a area that frosts... OK the area is the Karoo, which being a semi-desert, falls to about -6 deg celsius at night and rises to about 25-30 deg celsius during the day. The chillies in question are cayennes. What he did was to arrange 4 normal building bricks around the bas of each plant, this was originally place on plastic sheeting to facilitate controled watering in a dry area... what happened was during the winter (it's spring here now), the top of the plant died off, however the sun - warmed bricks kept the lower stem and roots frost free each night and all barring a few have over - wintered and started shooting again. HTH Cheers Brent
