Partly right... the part of the meal that was the actual entree (starter in Pom-speak) is/was called an appetizer in 'Murka. The main course (in a substantial restaurant) was delivered by the waiter on a big tray and was referred to by the wiaters as the "on tray" part of the meal. They would scream at the kitchen lackies "Give me my on-trays". And, of course, some enterprising restaurateur, looking to upscale his menu and his prices adopted the French spelling for the waiter's term. Not right, but........
