Hiya! I've been lurking for about a week and decided it was time to "come out". My name's Lora and I'm not sure I'm crazy enough to keep up with you guys but I'll give it a shot. I guess I'm a beginner Chile-head. My father and I have always had a love for hot Mexican foods and salsas but never grew or made them ourselves. We would just complain that the salsa wasn't hot enough until they brought us a bottle of Tabasco. Sadly, living in small town Nebraska, we didn't have much of a sauce choice in the stores. The best I've had was made by a Mexican friend if mine. He served me a dish of it with my smoked turkey. It was the color of BBQ sauce and silly me thought that's what it was. One large bite later I knew better! I'll have to give him a call and get the recipe!! Last year I ventured out and grew some tomatoes and Anaheim's from seeds. They didn't turn out too great - we moved at the end of the summer so I never had a chance to harvest most of my crop. This year I had great luck starting from seeds but wasn't able to get them in the ground as early as planned. They're doing well and I'm about 2 weeks away from swimming in peppers. I thought I had a good variety until I started reading some of the messages! Lots of Anaheim, a hot garden salsa, 2 super cayenne, and one each of habanero, jalapeno, and Caribbean red. I've also got 4 in pots that I'm not sure of. They got mixed up before I got them replanted. Hopefully they are Thai and Serrano but I'm not sure. I've also got lots of tomato plans since hubby is thirsting for some spicy tomato juice to add to his beer. For variety I picked up a few lemon boy tomatoes and started tomatillos from seed. They are doing great so I hope you've got lots of suggestions! I wasn't sure how they would do out here in the sandhills. I'll be planning better next year. Garden plot will be larger and this fall I'll work a lot of manure into the soil. So...what are the basics I need in my garden to become more of a Chile-head? I want to put in an herb garden as well so please help! Lora - Chile-head in training
