PLAN NOW FOR FUN TIMES AT THE SAM RAYBURN HOUSE MUSEUM IN BONHAM
The 2nd Annual Sam Rayburn Chili Cookoff will be held on September 22, 2001

Bonham, Texas-- The Friends of Sam Rayburn have set the date for the 2nd
Annual Sam Rayburn Chili Cookoff. This year's event will be held on
September 22nd at the Sam Rayburn House site in Bonham.

Along with chili cooking and tasting this year's event will feature the
cowboy music and poetry of the group "Cowboy s Forever", lots of Family
Games and Activities, and tours of the Sam Rayburn House Museum. There will
be a raffle for a large Sam Rayburn House replica Martin House, a patriotic
stars and stripes handmade quilt, a "Kake by Kim", and other surprise items.
As a special addition to the event this year, many crew members who served
on board the USS SAM RAYBURN submarine will attend the cookoff and visit the
Texoma area.

The USS SAM RAYBURN (SSBN 635) was the 50th nuclear powered submarine to
enter service. Constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock
Company, her keel was laid on December 3, 1962. She was launched on
December 20, 1963 by cosponsors Mrs. S.E. Bartley and Mrs. W. A. Thomas,
sisters of Speaker Sam Rayburn. Then President Lyndon Johnson said at the
keel laying ceremony "It is fitting that this vessel should bear the proud
name selected for it.Sam Rayburn gave his life to the cause of protecting
our freedoms and because he and men like him did so, we are strong and at
peace today."

The RAYBURN operated in Atlantic waters throughout its life, making patrols
from Charleston, Holy Loch, Scotland and Rota, Spain. The boat enjoyed its
share of success over the years, participating in successful operational
tests in 1976 and 1983, and winning the Battle Efficiency "E" on several
occasions. During the 1975-76 timeframe, the crew was often referred to as
the Mod Squad, as both Blue and Gold commanding officers were Lieutenant
Commanders and the wardrooms were comprised of a high percentage of Ensigns.

In 1989, the boat was converted to a nuclear prototype and utilized as a
training site for both officers and enlisted personnel to qualify them to
operate reactors aboard commissioned ships. The SAM RAYBURN is still being
used in this role at the Naval Weapons Station north of Charleston, South
Carolina.

Join the RAYBURN crew members and the Friends of Sam Rayburn this September
to celebrate the life of "Mr. Sam". The Sam Rayburn House Museum is located
just west of Bonham, Texas on old U.S. Highway 82. Tours of the House are
available from 8am-5pm Tuesday through Friday and 9am-5pm on Saturday.
Groups are always welcomed, but please call (903)583-5558 to schedule your
visit.
