Hyah Ted, am Real glad to know there is someone here who understands my weirdness in the cooking area. Of course, I am insanely jealous that you have a restaurant like La Cabanas nearby, given it is the perfect relief from Not Cooking Great Food! If I ever get to Indianapolis, will be sure to try that restaurant. There are tons of ethnic restaurants in the Wash DC metro area (DC, MD, VA), but I have yet to find anything a Mexican or other Latino food restaurant that sounds anywhere near as good as what you described. Cannot think of a one I thiink is memorable or even worth recommending to anyone, let alone dine at regularly. There could be one, of course, but I don't know about it. The chains are ... chains. The small independents are tucked away in neighborhoods and the ones I have tried are not that great. In fact, kinda stopped exploring due to never-ending disappointment after having overcome the logistical hurdles of reaching some of them in this car-choked and no-parking spaces metro area. What usually gets me into any of them at all anymore is that I start to crave a margarita. Another of my lil peculiarities. I am not much of a drinker, but from time to time for some reason, I actually crave a margarita. Sadly, have yet to find a great margarita at any of them, either. No matter, I have a margarita, dip a few chips into remarkable salsa, eat the dish of the day, and get it all out of my system for a few months! My pleasure generally comes from whatever congenial person(s) is eating with me, so the dining experience is still worthwhile. Could you tell us more about the slaw? Was it a milk-mayo-type dressing or vinegary or sweet? What else was in it besides jalapenos? (yah, you a true CH alright -- all you say about what's in the slaw is that it had slivers of jalapenos! ) See, I always think maybe I could replicate some of these dishes, like slaw. Given my non-cooking skills, that is a total joke, but I persist in my fantasy. Tee, who is at least Consistent. Sometimes. ============= > Ted: Wow, and I thought I was the only one! ;-) < >> Tee: For me the above is a LOT of cooking! <grin> <<< =============== >> Ted Wagner <trwagner1@yahoo.com> Subject: [CH] Restaurant Review - La Cabanas Ok, I promised a few folks I'd do a review. Now, mind you, this restaurant doesn't have chiles in everything. But, it will blow you away. ... EVERYTHING was wonderful. The fried tilapia was out of this world. They had a dish that reminded me of a cross between Naan and fry bread. In the center of the bread, there was a thin layer of refried beans. On top of this you put a slaw and ate it. The slaw had slivers of jalapenos. The whole thing was wonderful. The slaw was fabulous. <<
